The University of Dhaka (DU) syndicate has also decided to review all appointments of teachers, officials and employees made between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2024. It has formed a four-member committee to investigate allegations against teachers, officials and employees accused of opposing students during the July 2024 mass uprising.
Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Al-Mujaddedi Al-Fesani confirmed the decisions.
According to university sources, the decisions were taken at a syndicate meeting held on Tuesday, chaired by the vice-chancellor. The four-member committee, tasked with reviewing allegations and recommending necessary actions, comprises the vice-chancellor, the two pro-vice-chancellors and syndicate member Professor Morshed Hasan Khan.
Professor Al-Fesani said the university administration had received complaints and supporting evidence alleging that some teachers opposed the July uprising. The committee will verify the allegations and recommend actions against the individuals concerned as well as organisations with which they are affiliated. Under the decision, the committee will also examine a list of 125 teachers submitted by the anti-fascist teachers' platform. The vice-chancellor said if any accused teacher is affiliated with a teachers' organisation, appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, and the activities of the organisation may also be suspended if necessary.
Earlier, the BNP-backed teachers' platform White Panel and the Jamaat-backed University Teachers' Link (UTL) submitted complaints to the vice-chancellor against more than 100 teachers associated with the pro-Awami League Blue Panel. They alleged that during the July 2024 movement, some Blue Panel teachers opposed the student protests through press conferences, human chains and other activities while supporting the then government.
