Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said Bangladesh needs time to stabilise its economy before moving towards stronger growth, calling on the public to remain patient during the recovery process.
On Thursday, after offering prayers at a mosque next to his residence in Chattogram, he said prices have remained stable during this Eid period, with some items even becoming cheaper.
“As far as I know, prices did not rise this Eid-ul-Azha, rather they have slightly decreased.”
“Normally, prices rise during [Eid-ul-Azha], but this time they have eased. We want to maintain this trend so that essentials remain within people’s reach,” he added.
The veteran leader said inflation control requires time, pointing to global and regional challenges as well as inherited economic conditions, reports bdnews24.com.
“We are trying to bring prices under control. It is being worked on continuously. Hopefully, prices will gradually come down.”
He added, "But you have to give us some time. We are dealing with the fallout of the ongoing war in the West Asia, on top of the shattered economy left behind by previous administrations.
“We must bring a broken economy back to an even keel before heading toward real growth. I am begging my fellow countrymen to give us that window. We just need a little time."
According to him, the government remains accountable to the people and is working towards building a welfare-oriented state, urging continued public support and prayers.
