A head-on collision between a goods train and an onion-laden truck took place at Jhikargacha in Jashore early Friday, leading to the suspension of the train movement on the Jeshore-Benapole route.

According to Bangladesh Railway (BR), the accident occurred around 3:30 am when the truck bound for Noapara from Benapole entered the rail track ignoring signal of the train arrival.

Six wheels of the engine of the goods train were derailed during the accident, it said.

General Manager of BR Western Zone Mihir Kanti Guha told the FE Online that the accident occurred on the branch line and so train service on the other routes would not be affected.

A relief train has been working since 9:30am, he said adding that the train service may resume well before 12:45pm, the departure schedule for Benapole Express.

He, however, said that if the track is not ready by that time, the same train will start for Dhaka from Jeshore, not from Benapole.
