Though the traditional summer months have come to an end, a mild heatwave is sweeping through 19 districts in the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
"The temperature will not drop for the next 2-3 days. Instead, it may rise a little tomorrow and the heat will spread out to other districts," said Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid on Thursday, as per bdnews24.com reports.
However, rainfall is expected across the country after Tuesday, he said.
A mild heatwave swept through the Tangail, Kishoreganj and Naogaon districts and the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions on Wednesday, the BMD said in its bulletin. It will continue on Thursday, the Met office said.
Rangpur recorded the highest temperature in the country at 37.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The mercury rose to 35.5 degrees Celsius in Dhaka on the same day.
Meteorologists consider the 36-38 degrees Celsius threshold as a mild heatwave and 38-40 degrees Celsius as a moderate heatwave. Temperatures beyond 40 degrees Celsius are categorised as severe heatwaves.
The day and night temperature in the country will remain almost unchanged for the next 24 hours, the Met Office forecasts.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at a few places over the Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at one or two places over the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions in the 24 hours from 9 am on Thursday, the Met Office said in its bulletin.
It also forecasts moderately heavy rainfall in other parts of the country.
Chattogram's Swandip saw the most rain in the 24 hours to 6 am on Thursday with 54 mm. It also rained 46 mm in Noakhali's Maijdicourt, and 32 mm in Chattogram's Sitakunda.
Usually, 1-10 mm of rainfall in 24 hours is considered light rain, 11-22 mm is moderate, 23-43 mm is moderately heavy, 44-88 mm is heavy and more than 88 mm is very heavy rain.
