Heavy rainfall could trigger fresh flooding in seven districts over the next 24 to 72 hours, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The FFWC in its bulletin on Saturday said water levels in several major rivers are likely to rise to warning or danger levels.
It also said the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division remained stable over the past 24 hours but their water levels are expected to rise over the next three days.
According to the FFWC, water levels at some points of the rivers could cross the danger mark within the next 24 to 48 hours, causing short-term flooding in low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.
It also said water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in the north-eastern region had increased over the past 24 hours and were likely to continue rising over the next three days.
As a result, some monitoring stations on the two rivers could cross the danger levels within the next 72 hours, creating fresh flooding or prolonging the existing flood conditions in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, it said.
The FFWC further said water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma river systems also rose during the past 24 hours and were likely to continue increasing over the next five days.
It, however, warned that between July 20 and July 22, water levels at some points of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts could reach the warning level, inundating adjoining low-lying areas.
According to the FFWC, higher than normal tidal conditions were prevailing in several coastal rivers, including the Kirtankhola, Lower Meghna, Pashur, Ichamati, Karnaphuli, Little Feni and Noakhali Khal rivers.
The elevated tides are expected to persist for at least another day, it said.
