Human remains have been recovered in the US state of Florida, around 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the location where the remains of Bangladeshi PhD student Zamil Ahamed Limon were earlier found.

A joint operation by the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Offices retrieved the body parts from a water body near I-275 and 4th Street North on Sunday.

Police said the remains have been sent to the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office for forensic examination. Authorities are currently working to determine the identity of the deceased. It remains unclear whether the recovered body parts belong to a male or a female.

Further details will be released after the autopsy report and identity confirmation, police said.

The Public Affairs Office said the investigation is ongoing and authorities are closely reviewing whether the remains match any missing persons reports.

Earlier on April 16, two Bangladeshi PhD students from the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa -- Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Brishty -- went missing. Both were 27 years old.

Limon was pursuing a PhD in Geography, Environmental Science and Policy, while Nahida was studying Chemical Engineering.

Zamil Limon's remains were found on the Howard Frankland Bridge, near the area where deputies were searching on Sunday.

After Limon's body was found on Friday, authorities arrested his roommate, Hisham Abugharbieh, 26, who is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder.
