In protest against the eviction drive carried out by the Roads and Highways Department without prior notice, the Rajshahi Divisional Petrol Pump owners and Workers Unity Council announced an indefinite closure of all petrol pumps in northern part of the country from Wednesday morning.

During this time, the unity council has also stated that the extraction and distribution of all types of fuel from the Baghabari river port depot will remain suspended.

On Tuesday night, the organisation of pump owners and workers announced this programme, according to local media report.

Azizur Rahman, the president of the Northern Bangladesh Tank Lorry Workers' Union, made the announcement.

Speaking to journalists, Azizur Rahman alleged that on January 29, the Roads and Highways Department, claiming ownership of the land, inspected several petrol pumps in northern Bangladesh without prior notice, declared them ‘illegal’ through public announcements, and demolished several pumps.
