Hundreds of houses and mosques have been swallowed by the mighty Jamuna River in Sirajganj in a couple of days.
Meanwhile, a good number of people have become homeless and destitute due to the river erosion. The affected people fled to safety, leaving behind furniture, houses and even cattle heads.
Some three other nearby villages of sadar upazila are under threat of erosion. The river erosion started yesterday in Panchthakuri area of Chongachha union and washed away hundreds of houses.
UP chairman of Chhongachha Shahidul Alam said the havoc started suddenly. The dam was somehow repaired by dropping sandbags, but within three weeks most of the areas were washed away by the surging river water.
The victim Samsul Alom said he has never seen such a river erosion in his life. The erosion takes place when the river becomes furious. Some places of the upazila including houses and domestic animal, went into the river,he added.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of sadar Sarkar Asim said after inspecting the site the victims were being kept in various schools and madrasas., The district administration will provide all kinds of help to the victims, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Faruk Ahammad said dumping of sand filled geo bags will be started on an emergency basis soon to prevent erosion. However, many WDB officials are having trouble working in a hurry due to the corona, the DC added.
