Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived in the coastal resort city of Cox’s Bazar for a daylong tour focused on development projects, environmental initiatives and public engagements.
Braving heavy rain, the premier landed at Cox’s Bazar Airport aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 9:55am, according to his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, reports bddnews24.com.
He was received at the airport by State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Land Mir Md Helal Uddin, State Minister for Jute and Textiles Shariful Alam, District Commissioner Md Abdul Mannan and other officials.
After completing airport formalities, Tarique travelled by road to PM Khali Union to inaugurate a canal re-excavation project at Patili Khal, where he is scheduled to address a public gathering.
His itinerary also includes a visit to Dulahazara Safari Park and the launch of a nationwide campaign to plant 250 million trees at the Malumghat Reserved Forest.
Later, he will travel to Pekua Upazila to visit the grave of Md Wasim Akram, who was killed during the July Uprising of 2024, and meet members of his family.
The prime minister is also due to lay the foundation stones of the newly formed Pekua Municipality and Matamuhuri Upazila before attending a public rally organised by the district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) outside the Chakaria Municipal Bus Terminal.
He is expected to tour Marine Drive and the sea beach before joining a civic reception at Long Beach Hotel in the evening and returning to Dhaka.
Tarique returned to Bangladesh on Dec 25 last year after spending more than 15 years in London. This is his first visit to Cox’s Bazar since assuming office following the BNP’s victory in the February election.
