Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday the fall of the government was a matter of days, not even a month.
He called upon the participants of the ongoing movement against the government to move forward with courage.
"They (government) have killed and abducted our thousands of leaders and activists. They have filed five million cases against our party leaders and activists. As per government account, they have arrested 77 of our party leaders," he said at a seminar at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city.
"No more talks, let us be united today. Today it is a matter of hope that all people are now united, including all opposition political parties. All have now only one thing to say that free, fair and participatory elections are not possible under the present government," he stated.
Responding to the comments made by the Prime Minister (PM) that BNP was a terrorist party, he said, "Now you (PM Sheikh Hasina) started talking with a new tone against BNP. If BNP is a terrorist party, then you (PM and Awami League) is the father of terrorists".
"You (PM) want to remain in power by letting loose the reign of terror in the country," he said, alleging that the ruling AL resorted to a reign of terror in the country.
Mentioning the soaring prices of essential commodities, he said that people including the limited income group could not lead their life due to the price spiral.
Mr Fakhrul Islam Alamgir further said that due to lack of accountability, the prices of essential commodities were soaring and leaving the people in a difficult situation that made it impossible for the people to lead a decent life with their families.
He said that the main aim of the government's mega projects was to steal money by the ruling class.
He said most of the government employees were not unhappy as almost all government high officials were, either this way or that, involved with any mega projects, whereas the general people of the country were facing difficulties with purchase of essential commodities, including eggs and even vegetables.
"We (BNP) call upon you (the government) once for all that please resign and give elections under a neutral caretaker government and let the people of the country live peacefully," he said.
Standing committee member of BNP Dr Abdul Moin Khan said that the ruling Awami League was misruling the country.
He alleged that the ruling quarter were looting public money and siphoning off abroad.
"Awami League has destroyed the country's democracy. We (BNP and opponents) want to change it. Let the government give elections under a neutral caretaker government," he stated.
BNP vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo and advisers to party chairperson Tajmeri S A Islam and Abdus Salam also spoke at the seminar.
Sonali Dal, Bangladesh Agriculture University, Mymensingh, organised the seminar titled 'Price inflation of agro items and foods: Government mismanagement and sufferings of the people'.
President of Sonali Dal Prof Golam Hafiz presided over the event which was moderated by its general secretary Abul Kalam Azad.
