The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order cancelling BNP candidate Ali Azgar’s candidature for Mymensingh-1 constituency in the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.
The seven-member bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Tuesday passed the order after hearing on an appeal filed by the candidate.
Although the Election Commission accepted nomination paper of Ali Azgar, Farmers Bank filed a writ with the High Court bringing allegation of money laundering.
After hearing of the writ on December 9, the HC stayed his nomination. Later, Azgar filed the appeal challenging the HC order, UNB reported.
Jahurul Islam Mukul, lawyer of the bank, said that following the SC order, Azgar cannot contest the election.
