Students who have been volunteering to control traffic, clean roads, and beautify the city will be awarded certificates of encouragement, said Home Affairs Adviser Brigadier (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain on Sunday.

Mr Hossain made the announcement while speaking to reporters after visiting injured police personnel at the Central Hospital in Dhaka’s Rajarbagh.

The home adviser said he would request the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to issue certificates to the students in recognition of their sincere efforts, adding that these certificates should be considered valuable during higher education and job applications.

“The students are using their own funds to clean the city and beautify the walls," he noted.

Mr Hossain further said that the students’ voluntary work, which involves both labor and personal financial contributions, is a remarkable initiative.

“If this were a government project, it would have cost Tk 4.0-5.0 billion, or possibly even Tk 10 billion. There can be no better example for a country than this."

Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and left the country on August 5, following the uprising led by students and the public.

In the aftermath, police were attacked in several areas, prompting them to go on strike.

With no police presence, traffic control across the country, including in Dhaka, was left unmanaged.

In response, students have stepped in to manage traffic on the streets and have also taken to erasing old wall writings and creating new graffiti.

When asked when traffic police would resume duties, Inspector General of Police Maynul Islam, who accompanied Advisor Sakhawat Hossain, said discussions are ongoing.

He assured that there is no manpower shortage within the traffic police and that officers will first resume duties on VIP roads.

As of this day, Sunday, traffic police have started operations from Hotel Intercontinental to Jahangir Gate, he added.
