Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain has said ambassadors are free to visit “anyone’s home”, adding that the government has nothing to say or do about it.
The remarks came after reports that three European Union envoys recently held a meeting at the residence of former minister and Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury, bdnews24.com reports.
Touhid said, “From what we see, they visited an individual’s residence. If he were a criminal, he would have been held in custody, which was not the case. Ambassadors can go to anyone’s house.”
He recalled his own experience during his time in Kolkata, saying: “I wasn’t even an ambassador there, just one step below. I also went to many people’s homes -- it was never a problem.”
Former environment and forest minister Saber was arrested from Gulshan in Dhaka on Oct 6 last year, about two months after the fall of the Awami League government.
He was produced before court the following day in connection with the killing of BNP activist Md Mokbul, and underwent five days of interrogation.
He was also shown arrested in two other murder cases and two attempted murder cases filed with Khilgaon Police Station.
After the court hearing that day, a group of people broke through the police cordon and attacked Saber while he was being taken to the lock-up.
He, however, was granted bail in six cases and released within an hour on Oct 8.
