Dhaka metro rail is ready to run a test on the mass rapid transit (MRT) line-06 from Agargaon to Motijheel this week, signalling the second part's operation within months.

Sources said the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has given a target to the MRT-06 contractor for the trial run on July 07.

Official sources, however, said the date might be changed as per the decision of the high-ups.

"The public will start seeing the movement of train on the Agargaon-Motijheel part this week," said a source seeking not to be named.

All kinds of infrastructure development work on the 8.11-kilometre elevated track of MRT-06, including approval for electricity supply, have been completed.

The DMTCL opened the first part of MRT-06 on December 29 after its inauguration by the prime minister.

Initially, the 11.73-km line from Uttara to Agargaon was operated for four hours after completing all necessary performance tests of the train.

The train has been running from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm since May 31.

The DMTCL earlier announced to start trial run on the second part in July with a target to run the train on a commercial basis in December.

However, the minister concerned announced at another programme to start commercial operation in November.

Consultant sources said successful trial run, which would take at least two to three months, could only fix up the time of launching the rest part of MRT-06.

The DMTCL has also started extension of MRT-06 till Kamalapur station last January with a target to open it by 2025.

According to the DMTCL progress report, 96.4-per cent progress was recorded in the viaduct work while 92.10 per cent of electric and mechanical work done till May.

The June progress report is yet to be uploaded on the DMTCL website.

But all 24 sets of train for running on the MRT-06 line have been ready for trial operation.
