Will DUCSU VP-elect Nur take oath?

Doubts have come up whether Nurul Huq Nur will take oath as the vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) in the end, as his panel already boycotted the election alleging massive irregularities.

A student of the university’s English Department, he won the DUCSU VP in a stunning upset over Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Rezwanul Huq Chowdhury Shovon. Nur polled 11,062 votes, up by 1,933 from his closest rival’s 9,129.

The panel of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) which Nur led in the election announced the boycott on Monday noon.

Asked whether he will take oath as DUCSU VP, the quota protest leader who hails from Patuakhali said, “All student organisations but BCL, the ruling party’s student wing, have boycotted the election, and so I will decide after consulting them.”

“A scandalous chapter has been created in Dhaka University’s history through this election. The whole country is shocked” he said.

A total of 25 leaders of the DUCSU central committee and 13 each of 18 halls have been elected through the voting from 8:00am to 2:00pm on Monday, local media reports say.

As many as 229 candidates contest for 25 posts in the central union and 509 for 13 in each of the hall unions.

The DUCSU went to the polls this time after long 28 years and the last election prior to this was in June 1990.

Though the DUCSU was formed in 1922 just after the university was established, and its election is supposed to be held each year, only seven elections, including the latest, have so far been held.

The DUCSU, which has a name for its pivotal role in all democratic movements of the country, is believed to be the top-notch hub for grooming the youth leadership.
