FBCCI shows interest to deepen trade ties with Portugal

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) requested on Thursday the Bangladeshi ambassador to Portugal to facilitate expansion of business with the European country.

"Bangladeshis living in Portugal are doing good business with reputation," said the country's Ambassador to Portugal Ruhul Alam Siddique during a meeting with the board of directors of FBCCI at the apex trade body office in Dhaka.

"Bangladeshi entrepreneurs could tap the potential for investment in textile, leather, ceramic sectors in Portugal for the mutual benefits of the two countries," he said.

The Bangladeshi envoy assured the FBCCI leaders of putting his best efforts in developing the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Portugal during his tenure. He invited the FBCCI leaders to visit Portugal at a suitable time.

President of the FBCCI Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) stressed the need for setting up joint venture enterprises in leather, ceramic and other potential sectors with Portugal. He suggested technology transfer from Portugal.

He informed the Bangladeshi envoy that Bangladesh businessmen had developed the entrepreneurial capacity.

Bangladesh exports woven garments, leather goods, knitwear, frozen fish, dry food, and Jute goods etc to Portugal and imports agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine, oil products and chemical products etc.

Bangladesh exported goods to Portugal worth US $ 80.51million and imported products amounting to $ 4.50 million during the last fiscal year. FBCCI vice-president Md. Muntakim Ashraf, directors Tabaraqul Tosaddek Hossain Khan Titu and secretary general (In-Charge) Hussain Jamil among others were present.
