Bangladesh's journey towards a cashless economy has gathered fresh momentum as bKash, the country's largest mobile financial service (MFS) provider, has deployed interoperable Bangla QR codes at nearly 800,000 merchant outlets nationwide, creating the country's largest unified QR payment network.

The rollout, completed in line with Bangladesh Bank's directive to establish a single interoperable QR standard, allows customers of banks, mobile financial service providers and payment service providers to make digital payments using one common QR code, regardless of the institution they use.

For Mahmudul Hasan Nayeem, owner of Nayeem Collection in the bustling Kapasia Bazar of Gazipur, the new system has removed a long-standing business limitation.

For the past seven years, he has accepted payments through his bKash merchant account, but without investing in an expensive Point of Sale (POS) machine, customers using conventional banking apps could not pay directly.

"Now that bKash has installed the Bangla QR, we can receive payments from other banks and mobile financial service providers as well," Nayeem said. "With a single QR code, we can accept payments from all participating institutions, making it much easier to manage our daily sales."

His experience mirrors a broader transformation taking place across Bangladesh's retail sector. From neighbourhood grocery shops and pharmacies to fashion outlets, restaurants and superstores, merchants are increasingly embracing interoperable digital payments. Transactions through the Bangla QR network deployed by bKash have already reached around Tk 2.0 billion every day, reflecting the growing public confidence in cashless transactions.

For merchants, the interoperability of Bangla QR has simplified operations while broadening their customer base. Abu Saeed Rony, Manager of M.N. Fashion in Kumarpara, Sylhet, said the upgrade has made payment acceptance far more efficient.

"We used to receive many payments through bKash every day. Now customers from other banks and financial institutions can also pay through the same QR code. We believe this convenience will encourage even more people to adopt cashless payments in the coming days," he said.

Ali Ahmmed, Chief Commercial Officer of bKash, described the nationwide deployment as a significant milestone in expanding financial inclusion.

"The transition to interoperable Bangla QR marks a major step towards financial inclusion and the democratisation of technology in Bangladesh," he said. "Customers of banks, MFS providers and payment service providers can now make seamless cashless payments by scanning a single QR code anywhere in the country."

According to him, the initiative reduces the risks associated with carrying cash, simplifies merchants' daily operations and creates digital transaction records that can improve access to formal financial services, including credit.

Beyond deploying Bangla QR, bKash is introducing innovations designed to make digital payments more reliable and accessible. Among them are payment speakers-the first such solution introduced in Bangladesh-which provide instant voice confirmation whenever a payment is successfully received. The devices help merchants verify transactions immediately during busy business hours, reducing disputes while ensuring a smoother checkout experience for customers.

The company is also leveraging merchants' digital transaction histories to improve access to finance for small businesses. Under a pilot programme with BRAC Bank, eligible merchants can receive instant, collateral-free, short-term digital loans based on their QR transaction records. The initiative aims to address one of the biggest challenges faced by small enterprises: limited access to formal credit due to insufficient financial documentation.

Recognising that infrastructure alone cannot change consumer habits, bKash has also launched promotional campaigns to encourage greater use of Bangla QR. Customers making payments through the bKash app at more than 45,000 merchant outlets can enjoy cashback and discount coupons worth up to Tk 10,000. The campaign will continue until 31 August 2026.

As bKash approaches its 15th anniversary, the nationwide deployment of Bangla QR highlights the company's evolution from a simple money transfer platform into a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem. By enabling merchants to accept payments from customers across banks, MFS providers and payment service providers through a single interoperable QR code, bKash is helping accelerate Bangladesh's transition towards a more inclusive, efficient and truly cashless economy.
