Despite a sparkling five-wicket haul from slow bowler Taijul Islam, South Africa have taken a 34-run lead in the Mirpur Test against Bangladesh.
The visiting Proteas looked in charge on Monday after they bundled out the Tigers for a meagre 106, but Taijul (5-49) pegged back their innings, nabbing crucial wickets just as batsmen seemed to be settling into a comfortable innings.
At stumps, South Africa were on 140-6 with Tony de Zorzi (30) as their top-scorer and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (18) and Wiaan Mulder (17) at the crease.
It was a more positive end to the day for the Tigers, who had stumbled out of the gates with another poor batting performance after winning the toss and choosing to bat.
The top order wilted against the pace of Wiaan Mulder (3-22), who was ably supported by fellow seamer Kagiso Rabada (3-26) and spinner Keshav Maharaj (3-34).
Rabada notably became the fastest bowler to take 300 Test wickets in terms of the number of deliveries.
Among the Bangladesh batsmen, only opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy managed to put up a semblance of resistance, making 30 off 97 balls.
The highest partnership was the ninth-wicket stand of 26 runs between Taijul and Nayeem Hasan. No other partnership exceeded 30 runs.
This was the sixth time in their last seven home innings that Bangladesh have failed to reach 200 runs. They also matched their lowest score when choosing to bat first.
Only once have the Tigers been bowled out for a lower score at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium -- 87 runs against Pakistan in 2021.
But the quick wickets from Taijul give them a fighting chance going into Day 2 of the Test.
