Stocks on both the bourses posted marginal gains in the early trading on Wednesday amid volatile trading as a section of investors remained busy with booking profit on sector-wise issues.
Following the past five days’ upward movement, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) opened also higher today amid low turnover.
Within the first 15 minutes of trading, DSEX, the key index of the DSE, advanced 22 points, crossing the 5000-mark, while the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) of the port city’s bourse gained 10 points at 10:15am.
After that, both the key indices started to decline, losing most of the initial gains. Within the 30 minutes of trading, the DSEX managed more than 1.93 points while the CASPI of the Chattogram bourse advanced 6.38 points at 10:30am when the report was filed.
The DSEX went up by 1.93 points or 0.03 per cent to reach 4,980 points at 10:30am.
The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) also advanced 0.72 points to reach 1,150 points till then. However, the DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 2.68 points to reach at 1,731.
Turnover, one of the important indicators of the market, stood at Tk 2.04 billion when the report was filed which was Tk 1.95 billion in the previous day at 10:30am.
Market operators said the risk-averse investors went on booking profit on sector specific stocks as the market surged for the past five straight sessions.
However, a section of investors remained active in the market riding on regulator’s disciplinary and market development measures and gradual improvement of economic activities, said a leading broker.
Of the issues traded till then, 175 advanced, 97 declined, and 55 remained unchanged.
Beximco Pharma was the most traded stock till filing of this report with shares worth Tk 383 million changing hands, closely followed by Brac Bank, Beximco, Square Pharma and Orion Pharma.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange also saw a positive trend till then with the CASPI gaining 6.38 points to stand at 14,225, also at 10:30am.
The Selective Category Index (CSCX) also rose 0.57 points to stand at 8,570 points till then.
Of the issues traded till then, 70 gained, 37 declined, and 23 issues remained unchanged with Tk 55 million in turnover.
