Stocks extend losses on profit booking

Stocks extended the losing streak for the second day in a row on Thursday as some investors continued to book quick-profit on sector-wise issues.

Market analysts said stocks kept losing streak as a section of investors opted for booking profit on stocks which saw sharp gain in recent price upsurge.

After witnessing volatility throughout the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 13.91 points or 0.23 per cent to settle at 5,825.

The two other indices also ended lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 7.78 points to close at 2,009 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) lost 12.91 points to finish at 1,309.

The daily trade turnover on Dhaka bourse remained above Tk 10 billion-mark and amounted to Tk 10.11 billion which was Tk 10 billion in the previous day.

A total number of 221,601 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 287.57 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE fell slightly to Tk 4,121 billion which was Tk 4,123 billion in the previous day.

The losers took a modest lead over the gainers as out of 346 issues traded, 196 declined, 118 advanced and 32 issues remained unchanged on the DSE floor.

The newly listed S.S. Steel dominated the turnover chart with 7.54 million shares worth nearly Tk 382 million changing hands. Its share also jumped 401 per cent to close at Tk 50.10 each, from the issue price of Tk 10.

It was followed by Khulna Power Company, United Finance, Active Fine Chemicals and JMI Syringes & Medical Devices.

Bay Leasing dominated the gainers chart, posting a gain of 9.95 per cent gain while Imam Button Industries was the day’s worst loser, losing 10 per cent.

Port city bourse Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended lower with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –shedding 41 points to settle at 17,858 points and Selective Categories Index – CSCX –losing 22 points to finish at 10,790.

The losers beat the gainers as 156 issues closed lower, 98 ended higher and 23 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 16.37 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 499 million in turnover.
