The scam-hit e-commerce portal Alesha Mart has sought adequate security from the government with an eye to running its business smoothly, officials said.

On December 02, the crisis-ridden dotcom requested the commerce ministry to take steps to this effect.

Alesha Mart has suspended its operations due to "security reasons", chairman Md Monzur Alam Sikder made the announcement during a live recording from the company's verified Facebook page.

On Tuesday, commerce ministry additional secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman said, "The digital platform on December 02 sought security to run its operations smoothly."

"We've already written to the competent authorities, including home ministry, to take necessary measure facilitating its official operations," added Mr Zaman, also chief of his ministry's Digital Commerce Cell.

Mr Sikder said, "We will resume our activities only after getting assurances of adequate security,"

The company's account is now blocked by the authorities concerned. Presently, there is a credit balance of only Tk 20 million in it, according to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit.

The e-commerce site has already withdrawn an estimated Tk 19.99 billion (1999.20 crore) out of Tk 20.01 billion (2001.28 crore) from the deposit, it disclosed.
