Bangladesh aims to export 4,000 tonnes of mangoes over the next three months, while 600 tonnes have already been shipped to 25 countries, officials said on Wednesday, reports BSS.
"We are expecting to export 4,000 tonnes of mangoes within the next three months. So far, we have exported 600 tonnes to 25 countries," said Mohammad Arifur Rahman, Project Director of the Exportable Mango Production Project under the Department of Agricultural Extension.
He said the United Kingdom—particularly England—would be the single largest destination for Bangladeshi mangoes. The 600 tonnes were exported over the past 16 days to various destinations.
According to the official, mangoes were being exported at prices ranging between US$5 and US$5.5 per kilogram, but freight charges accounted for most of the cost, ranging from US$3 to US$4.
Officials said that last year Bangladesh exported 1,320.398 tonnes of mangoes to 21 countries.
In terms of export volume, the major destination countries were the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Italy, Qatar, Singapore, Germany, Bahrain, Sweden, Canada, France, Maldives, Switzerland, Ireland, Hong Kong, Oman, Malta, Greece, Lebanon, and the Netherlands.
Statistics show that around 3,100 tonnes of mangoes were exported in 2022–23, while 1,321 tonnes were exported in 2023–24.
According to mango producers, Bangladesh has yielded an estimated 2.7 million tonnes of mangoes this year. Officials stated that the country produced 2.7 million tonnes in 2022–23 and 2.45 million tonnes in 2023–24.
“The varieties of exported mangoes generally include Gopalbhog, Himsagor, and Lengra,” Rahman added.
As part of official formalities, exporters are required to obtain several certificates and follow specific procedures. Key requirements include registration with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), an Export Registration Certificate (ERC), and a Certificate of Registration as an Exporter of Horticultural Products, especially for exports to the EU.
