Biman decides to buy 14 aircraft from Boeing

The Biman Bangladesh Airlines authorities have decided, in principle, to purchase 14 aircraft from the US aviation giant Boeing.

The decision was taken at the board meeting of the state-run airlines on Tuesday (December 30), according to a statement, issued by General Manager (public relations) of the airline Boshra Islam.

According to the decision, the Biman authorities will place buying orders for four Boeing 737 MAX and 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. As per negotiations, Boeing is to deliver the first aircraft in November 2031 and the last one in October 2035, it said.

She further said proposals from both Boeing and European giant manufacturer "Airbus" were placed before the Biman board.

After getting the government approval, Boeing formally submitted a detailed proposal on November 24, outlining the aircraft sale, delivery schedule, and other terms.

Meanwhile, the national flag carrier posted a net profit of Tk 7.85 billion in the 2024-2025 fiscal year (FY), reflecting a 178 per cent rise compared to the previous year's earnings, according to the official statement.

The national flag carrier also recorded an operating profit of Tk 16.02 billion in the last fiscal while its total revenue soared by 9.46 per cent year on year to Tk 115.59 billion, the highest amount in its history.

The figures were disclosed in the annual financial statements of Biman at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on December 30 in 2025 with the Chairman of the Biman's Board of Directors Sk Bashir Uddin in the chair.

With such impressive financial performances, the state-run Biman sustained its profitable streak for the fifth consecutive year, and also posted net profits in nine out the last ten fiscal years, according to the statement.

Earlier, in August last year, Biman authorities stated that the airline had posted the highest-ever profit of Tk 9.37 billion in the 2024-2025 fiscal year since its inception in 1972.

However, Ms. Boshra clarified that the earlier figure was based on an unaudited report, while the latest figure comes from an audited report.

During the FY 2024-2025, Biman operated a fleet of 21 aircrafts and carried 3.38 million passengers across 30 domestic and international destinations, reflecting a 1.0 per cent increase from the previous year.

Cargo operations also saw a strong growth, with the airline transporting 43,918 metric tonnes of cargo and generating Tk 9.25 billion in revenue, a 45.21 per cent year-on-year increase.

Additionally, the Biman provided ground handling services for 31,112 foreign airline flights, serving more than 6.1 million passengers, it was learnt.

According to officials, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is a fully self-financed state-owned enterprise and has not received any government subsidy over the last 54 years of its operations.

According to the statement, the national flag carrier also recorded the highest-ever ticket sales in January 2025, reflecting strong passenger confidence and growing market popularity.
