The Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) has launched a mobile app-based “Fuel Pass” system aimed at ensuring transparency and discipline in fuel distribution.
The pilot programme, introduced at two filling stations in the capital, allows motorcycle riders to purchase fuel using quick response (QR) codes, according to an EMRD press release issued on Thursday.
Developed by state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, the system is currently being tested at Trust Filling Station in Tejgaon and Sonar Bangla Filling Station at Asad Gate.
Officials said the initiative would be expanded nationwide for all types of vehicles if the pilot proves successful.
The move seeks to reduce long queues and prevent artificial shortages often caused by manual distribution, where individuals can collect fuel multiple times.
Under the Fuel Pass system, fuel allocations will be digitally recorded, drivers will scan QR codes to receive fuel, and central authorities will be able to monitor supply in real time.
The system will also be integrated with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority database, enabling vehicle-based verification and helping curb irregularities.
Authorities expect the initiative to enhance transparency, minimise wastage and improve crisis management.
Non-smartphone users will be able to register through a website and use printed QR codes, the press release added.
