Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has recommended to form a single authority for establishing good governance in the country’s readymade garment sector.
“In the absence of a single authority, garment manufacturers have to take certificates from 17 authorities which is a complex process,” said TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman, adding that a single authority for coordination and supervision is required for RMG sector’s sustainable development.
Dr Zaman made the recommendation at a press conference, organised to disclose the research findings on ‘Good Governance in RMG Sector: Progress and Challenge’, held at TIB’s head office in the capital on Thursday.
He said some 39 to 40 per cent of the 102 measures taken have been implemented in the last four years, adding that 41 per cent of the steps are being implemented, while the rest 20 per cent remained slow or stagnant.
Terming the progress remarkable, he said workers are still deprived of the lawful rights.
The report recommended necessary amendments in the labour law to remove inconsistencies in workers’ compensation, maternity leave, right to unionise and collective bargaining.
Its other suggestions included ensuring workers lawful rights related to wages, overtime and leave through coordinated efforts and increased government supervision.
