Bangladesh 49th top merchandise importing country

Bangladesh has been ranked as the 49th top merchandise importing country in the past year, according to the World Trade Organization – Trade Profiles 2018.

The report, released in July, also showed that by excluding intra-EU (European Union) trade, the rank jumped to 31st place in 2017.

Nevertheless the country’s share in the global merchandise import is still below 1.0 per cent.

According to the WTO estimation, it was around 0.29 per cent in the past year.

On the CIF (Clearing, Insurance and Forwarding) basis, the value of merchandise import stood at $52.83 billion in the past year, unveiled the report.

China is the main source of import for Bangladesh followed by India, Singapore and European Union.

Global import stood at $18,024 billion in the past year. By excluding intra-EU trade, it came down to $14,243 billion in 2017, according to the WTO statistics.
