Bhutan King to sign MoU on establishing SEZ in Bangladesh

Bangladesh and Bhutan will sign three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) during the visit of Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who will arrive in Dhaka on Monday.

This is the first high-level visit by a foreign dignitary to Bangladesh after the Awami League formed the government for a new term.

The MoUs include the establishment of a burn unit in Thimphu, a special economic zone for Bhutan in Kurigram district in Bangladesh, and technological cooperation to ensure consumer protection.

Besides, an agreement on cultural cooperation will be renewed during the four-day visit.

President Shahabuddin Ahmed will receive the Bhutanese king at the airport, Foreign Minister Dr Hassan Mahmud told reporters at a press briefing on Sunday. 

The king will pay homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi, 32, on the first day of his visit.

He will also pay homage to the martyrs of the liberation war of Bangladesh at the Liberation War Memorial at Savar on March 26 and attend the programme of Independence Day.

He will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Sahabuddin.

The Bhutanese King will visit the special economic area at Araihazar Upazila in Narayanganj, the Padma Bridge, and Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute.

Responding to a question, the Foreign Minister said, the expansion of bilateral trade, cooperation in the tourism and IT sectors, energy imports from Bhutan, regional energy cooperation among Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and India, the scope of PTA, and transit cooperation between the two countries will feature the bilateral meeting between the two countries.

The government will announce an increase in the admission quota for Bhutanese students from 22 to 30 in the government medical colleges during the King’s visit.

Bhutan will also get the opportunity to send two officials for training at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

The minister said that the king will visit the proposed place for the establishment of a special economic zone for Bhutanese entrepreneurs on Thursday, and on the same day, he will depart for his country through Sonahat land port.
