FDI from Singapore drops by two-thirds in 2017

Net inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from Singapore declined by 69 per cent in 2017, according to the latest statistics of the central bank.

It showed that the net inflow of Singaporean FDI dropped to $202.73 million in the past year, which was $673 in 2016.

In 2016, Singapore Telecom (Singtel) became the largest shareholder in Bharati Airtel and thus brought some $300 million in Bangladesh to enhance the equity of Airtel in the country.

As a result, FDI from Singapore jumped by almost four times in that year.

Bangladesh Bank data also showed that the highest amount of Singaporean FDI was injected into the power sector and its net inflow stood at $104.15 million in 2017.

The stock of FDI from Singapore had reached $936 million by the end of the past year.
