The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) of Dhaka University (DU) has celebrated its 56th founding anniversary with the theme, “Mass Media, Mass People and Democracy.”

To marking the day, teachers and students of the MCJ brought out a colourful procession from the base of Aparajeya Bangla premises at 11:00 am and ended in front of social science building on Thursday.

After the procession, they organised a prize giving ceremony and discussion programme at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium.

They also arranged a seminar where Professor Emeritus Dr A F Serajul Islam Chowdhury presented a keynote paper titled ‘Mass Media, Social System and Liberty of Mass People’ on the occasion.

DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman addressed the function as chief guest while department chairperson Prof Kaberi Gayen presided over the programme.

The Vice Chancellor said, “False news spreads rumours and creates misunderstanding among the people of the society.”

“Objectivity is the key to journalism and without this (objectivity) functional journalism is impossible. So you should maintain objectivity in your activities,” he said.

Prof Serajul said mass media is largely influenced by advertisements as most newspapers are bound to publish advertisement contents to flourish their businesses.

Later, two websites- www.mcjedu.com an informative site of the department and www.dumcjnews.com a practical news portal, were inaugurated at the function.

The Mass Communication and Journalism Department of DU started its journey through diploma courses on August 2, 1962 and it is now offering undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees.
