Students attend classes under open sky in Jashore 

Academic activities at Fatehpur Government Primary School under Keshabpur upazila in Jashore are being hampered seriously after its tin-made roof has been damaged by a nor'wester recently.

Now a total of 98 students of the school attend their classes under the open sky and they and their teachers have to take shelter in nearby houses in case of rains, witnesses said.

Locals said their fellow villagers, like Wazed Ali Mollah, Motableb Kha, Kawsar Mollah, Ibrahim Gazi, Daut Morol and Nur Islam, set up the primary school in 2001.

The school first started its journey with an office room and three classrooms made of bamboo fences and clay-made shed.

Later, the classrooms got tin-roofed with financial support from the managing committee and teachers.

But during a recent storm, the roof of the four rooms, including that of the office, were blown away, leaving the overall structure of the school damaged.

As an instant initiative, classes have been arranged at nearby Eidgah under the open sky.

Besides, the school authorities said that although the school got recognition through a gazette notification in March 2018, its teachers are yet to receive their salaries from government fund.

Meanwhile, the school teachers wrote to different offices seeking fund to set up the school building, but there has been no response so far.

Contacted, Upazila Education Officer Akbar Hossain said Fatehpur Government Primary School got government’s recognition recently and it was put in the list, UNB reported.

“The construction of the school building will begin soon as the process is underway,” the officer added.
