Dhaka temperatures on Saturday climbed to 40.4 degrees Celsius, a rise of 2 degrees from Friday, marking the season's highest temperature in the capital, according to the Met Office.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded that Jessore registered the highest temperature nationally at 42.6 degrees Celsius, local media quoted BMD sources as saying.

BMD sources were also quoted to have said that there is little likelihood of a decline in temperatures over the next two days.

Since early April, Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh have been facing escalating heat waves. Although brief showers on April 7 and 8 offered some cooling, temperatures have surged again.

BMD classifies heat waves into four categories: mild at 36 to 37.9 degrees Celsius, moderate at 38 to 39.9 degrees, severe from 40 to 41.9 degrees, and extremely severe at 42 degrees and above.

Saturday’s high temperatures in Dhaka city reached the severe category.

BMD sources said that the country is expected to see no significant relief from the heat anytime soon.

Amid this situation, authorities on Saturday decided to extend school closures across the country to protect students from the severe temperatures.
