PPD’s Permanent Global Secretariat opens in Dhaka

The Permanent Global Secretariat of Partners in Population and Development (PPD), an international Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) grouping 26 developing countries, has formally been inaugurated at Agargaon in Dhaka, said a statement.

Mohammed Nasim MP, Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Govt. of Bangladesh and Wang Pei'an, Vice Minister of National Health Commission of China inaugurated the most modern newly constructed six-storied international headquarters of PPD at a ceremony held recently.

 "It is a unique privilege for Bangladesh having the headquarters of such a prestigious international Intergovernmental Organizations in Bangladesh. It reflects the image and standing Bangladesh enjoys in the international arena" said Dr. Hu Hongtao, Executive Director of PPD.

He also expresses high appreciation and gratitude to the Government of Bangladesh for hosting PPD Secretariat in Dhaka and donating a precious piece of land for construction of PPD Secretariat Building Complex. He also wholeheartedly thanked the Government of China for donating 2.3 million US Dollars and to Governments of India and South Africa for contributing 100 thousand US Dollars each to the building construction.

 

Dr. Hu Hongtao observed that the forthcoming Executive Committee Meeting bears special significance, since this meeting will adopt the vital legal instruments such as revised PPD Charter, By-Laws and Policy Documents, in addition to routine governance programs. He further observed that Bangladesh is honoured with perennial leadership of PPD by hosting its global Secretariat and hosting events of historic importance. He predicted that PPD is poised to emerge as one of the most respected global organizations for the world community to take into cognizance.


PPD is an international Intergovernmental Organizations (IGO) grouping 26 developing countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East covering nearly 60 percent of the world population. Launched during historic UN International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo in September 1994, the principle objectives of PPD is to consolidate, institutionalize, promote and strengthen South-South Cooperation in Population and Development among developing countries to improve the lives of the people and sustainable development of their nations.

The modalities of South-South Cooperation is knowledge management, sharing, exchange and transfer of successful experiences, expertise, information and technologies in broad spectrum of population and development activities. The unprecedented success of this innovative and new paradigm of efficient and cost-effective development corporation earned PPD huge international recognition reflected through Permanent Observer Status at the UN General Assembly, diplomatic status in Bangladesh.
