Saying goodbye is hard. But in every sphere of life, we have to bid farewell to our past—whether in personal or professional life. Resigning from a job requires a complex process to keep it simple and pleasant for yourself and the office.

Be clear about your reasons

As someone is ready to resign, they have an inner conversation with themselves about the reasons behind it. They focus on the needed changes in their career. It might be the salary, a growthless position or even the job environment. There might also be some personal necessities for one to take this step.

But whatever the reason is, try to be practical about it and present the reasons very clearly to the employer. In this way, there would not be any confusion between you and your office. They would understand the points and might also present you with some negotiable terms. If the negotiation seems worthy, one can consider it and proceed with what suits them best.

Give an advance notice

When you are going to despise a work position, the company needs to refill it with another deserving candidate, and for this, they will need a preparation period. That is why, when you are sure you are ready to leave the job, provide the company with a one or two-month notice according to the organisation's policy.

Resign in person

Leaving without a notice period or over a phone call does not seem very professional and might create a very chaotic image of an employee. Keeping one's career graph clean is an excellent way to deal with the resignation process. You should schedule a private meeting with your manager and give yourself enough time to discuss the leaving.

Along with that, do not forget to prepare a formal resignation letter mentioning the reasons, even if you have discussed it before; tell them how grateful you are for the opportunity given to you and how it enriched your growth scale and then end it with a good wish for the office and your colleagues.

Finish the pending tasks

Every role holds some specific responsibilities and nobody else can fill it up as efficiently. So, if you have some pending and essential tasks, fulfil the work and make a full report on it before leaving. With this effort, your teammates would not feel like a fish out of water after your departure. Besides, after quitting to quit, you do not get attached to any new role or task. Because it would make things more difficult for both parties– you and the company. You may also make a transition plan for the team to prosper even in your absence and with newer guidance.

Handing over the duties

If you have a good relationship with your former workplace and there are no hard feelings between you, it would be great to hand over your duties to the newly assigned person properly. This way, a sense of legacy with the position will be maintained.

Leave the place, not the people

Wherever we go, whatever we do– we keep building relationships with one another. An office might be a workplace, but at the end of the day, we all are human beings, and if the environment is friendly enough, then it is natural to have some work friends.

Leaving the job does not necessarily mean that all ties will break. You can still have a healthy relationship with your former boss and colleagues and leave a scope to meet for a cup of tea when you both feel like it. Maintaining harmony even after quitting is an excellent way to say goodbye.

While spending your last days on the job, you can ask your manager or co-workers about being references for the next steps in your career. Ending the job on a positive note will allow you to enhance your professional network even after leaving the office, and it will work both ways.

Because wherever you go, if it is barely from a similar job spectrum, you will likely meet and exchange pleasantries over work meetings. And if you are going to join a new arena, still some of the former co-workers can prove helpful. That is also a reason for not breaching the bridge between your past and present work life.

Do not be irrational

This condition applies to both parties– the worker and the office. Taking a hasty decision and hurrying would not benefit any of you. That is why, discuss the ideas with your mentors, take a step ahead of your planning and then take a hit.

Another thing is important while leaving a job, and that is a duty toward yourself. You need to have a backup plan. Is the new position offering you more, or are you going to be more comfortable with the new scenario? If the answers are affirmative, then you are just ready for the next step in your career, and it is time to say goodbye to a professional workplace in its proper manner with the aforementioned tips.
