Ozu, a town steeped in history nestled in western Japan, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once a declining river town with neglected heritage sites, Ozu has become a beacon of sustainable tourism, attracting visitors and residents alike.

The town's success lies in its innovative approach. Ozu embarked on an ambitious plan in 2019 to revitalize the area. This plan centred on conserving and converting historical buildings into unique accommodations and new businesses.

A scattered hotel experience

At the heart of this transformation lies the Nipponia Ozu Castle Town Hotel, a 'Scattered hotel' concept. Instead of a centralized building, the hotel rooms and services are spread across various meticulously restored historical structures throughout the town. This allows visitors to stay in samurai residences, merchant houses, or even the Ozu Castle itself for a truly immersive experience.

Sustainable practices, community focus

Ozu's definition of sustainable tourism prioritizes a balance between residents and visitors. The town's revitalization efforts have not only preserved its heritage but also fostered a vibrant local scene. Restored buildings now house shops selling local crafts and regional products, attracting new residents and entrepreneurs.

A town welcoming new and old

The collaborative spirit between the city government, hotel, and community is another key factor in Ozu's success. This welcoming atmosphere has attracted a new generation of residents who appreciate the town's rich history, vibrant energy, and natural beauty.

Can Dhaka be like Ozu?

The density of Dhaka, the polluted environment the dying Buriganga River testaments the vulnerability of the city. However, from the historic buildings of Farashganj to Panam City, Dhaka has a rich heritage and culture of its own. What has been adopted in Ozu of Japan? Can it be applicable to Dhaka? Hundreds of thousands of people visit Dhaka who want to explore the cultural diversity that the city has as well as its history. To serve and attract a greater number of foreigners in the capital transformation like Ozu might help.
