'Drug peddler' dies in gunfight in Brahmanbaria

An alleged drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” between his associates and police at Nurpur village in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday.

Deceased Jalal Uddin Badu, 34, son of Daru Mia of the upazila, was accused in five cases, including drug and stealing, filed with Akhaura Police Station, reports UNB.

Akhaura Police Station officer in-charge Mosharraf Hossain Torafdar said police on Friday rescued Jalal from a mob beating after he crossed the Indian border.  Later, he was taken to Upazila Health Complex and then, taken to the police station.

As per information given by Jalal during interrogation, a team of police along with the detainee went to the area to seize firearms and drugs around 2:00 am, he added.

Sensing presence of police, accomplices of Jalal opened fire on the law enforcers to snatch him away, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight that left Jalal and two policemen injured.

The injured was taken to Upazila Health Complex where duty doctor declared him dead.

Police recovered one pipe gun and a machete from the spot.
