48-hr hartal underway in Rangamati

A 48-hour hartal enforced by Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Nagorik Parishad protesting the killing of five people, including microbus driver Sajib Hawladar, is underway peacefully in Rangamati district.

Their demands also include the release of three people who were allegedly abducted from Khagrachhari on April 16.

Vehicular movement in the district was stopped due to the hartal.

On the first day of hartal, no long route buses were seen in the district. Most of the businesses remained shut.

The hartal supporters also brought out processions in separate places.

Additional police have been deployed at different strategic point of the district.

On May 4, five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila.

They came under the attack while going to attend the funeral programme of the slain upazila parishad chairman at his Kukurmara family crematory in the upazila from Khagrachhari.

Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex on May 3, reports UNB.

After the attack, persistent patrolling by Army and police were underway at important points of the district while additional forces were deployed around the Sadar Upazilas of Rangamati and Khagrachhari.
