A unit of Barapukuria coal-fired power plant will go into operation for five days from Monday to meet the demands of electricity during the Eid-ul-Azha.

Manager and executive engineer of power plant, Mahbubur Rahman said currently a total of 5000/6000 metric tons of coal was in reserve from which 70 to 80 megawatt electricity can be generated from Unit No. 2.

With this, the problem of low voltage and load shedding will be reduced in the area, he said, reports UNB on Sunday.

On July 22, the 525MW Barapukuria Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant was shut down due to coal crisis due to disappearance of huge volume of coal.

A team from Power Development Board found huge shortage of coal in the yard of the mine during its visit on the day.

As per the official investigation, the stock was found to have a shortage of 148,000 tonnes of coal. A case was filed with Parbatipur Police Station on July 24 against 19 officials.

The case was later transferred to the Anti-Corruption Commission for investigation.
