SYLHET, Mar 03: Boro farming target in Sylhet region has surpassed by over 2.0 per cent.
Although transplantation of seedlings in most of the area of the zone is close to end, some farmers in low-lying areas will continue the farming for another week, an official at the DAE Sylhet divisional office said.
This is why the coverage area would get a little increase this season, the official further said.
According to the reports from the districts, so far 476,879 hectares of land have already been cultivated against the previously-set target of 468,557 hectares.
The covered area includes 79,767 hecatres in Sylhet, 52,032 hectares in Moulvibazar, 1,21,500 hectares in Habiganj and 223,580 hectares in Sunamganj.
The total, however, includes 275,705 hectreas in the haor areas and the rest 201,174 hectares on the non-haor areas in the four districts of the division, the report said.
Since the crop's farming is increased this season in all the four districts, the official said seedbeds were set on a total of 26,100 hectares although the target was 21,945 hectares.
The cultivated area includes 87,001 hectares of hybrid, 377,146 hectares of high yielding vareties and 12,732 hectares of local varieties, the official added.
The DAE had earlier set the farming target at 468,557 hectares in the region, including 79,709 hectares in Sylhet, 53,116 hectares in Moulvibazar, 118,197 hectares in Habiganj and highest 217,535 hectares in Sunamganj.
Farmer Anwar Hossain of village Mollargaon under Dakhin Surmaj upazila of Sylhet said we are late and transplanted seedlings last week.
Farmers in many areas of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj delayed the job due to late recession of waters from crop lands on lower region last week.
The government through DAE distributed assistance for a total of 9200 selected poor farmers this season in the division spending Tk 9.22 million. The inputs include seed, fertiliser and other expenses.
However, farmers on some areas are in trouble as they failed cultivating the crop this season due to accumulation of silts on many haors in the Sunamganj and Habiganj districts and shortage of water. They need water for those lands for the main crop of the season.
