Students in their hundreds have blocked the road in front of the Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka city protesting against the death of a fellow of them from Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).

Students from North South University, Independent University of Bangladesh, American International University of Bangladesh among others joined the protests.

Passengers, especially office-goers, suffered the most as they were seen walking to office due to the blockade.

Witnesses said the accident took place as a bus tried to overtake another bus on the road in front of the gate of the Bashundhara Residential Area around 7:00am.

The bus that ran over the student belongs to Suprovat Paribahan, a bus service that plies from Gazipur’s Board Bazar to Dhaka’s Sadarghat, they said.

Police say the dead student was identified as Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, son of Brig General (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury of Bashundhara Residential Area. He was a first year student of BUP’s Department of International Relations.

Gulshan Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain said they have seized the killer bus and are trying to detain the driver and the helper.
