Bogura villagers attain solvency by making brooms

BOGURA, July 29: A good number of people in the district have changed their financial condition by making brooms.

Sources said Nandigran, Sherpur, Gabtoly, Dhunot and Kahaloo upazilas are well-for making brooms.

Arup Kumar of Kahaloo upazila said he earns Tk 200 to Tk 250 per day after selling brooms.

He said it is his only source of income.

Broom makers collect the raw materials from riverbed and dry those properly. They keep the materials at open place for fifteen days.

Later, the artisans make the broom with cotton yarn.

Bablu of Dhunot upazila said, "I have attained financial solvency to my family by making brooms. I earn Tk 350 to Tk 400 per day."

"I sell the item moving from one door to another daily," he added.

To produce a quality broom a maker has to invest Tk 20 to Tk 25. He sells it at Tk 50 to Tk 60 in the retail market, while Tk 45 to Tk 47 in the wholesale market.

Sources said broom making is gaining popularity in the district due to high profit.
