Farming of mustard plants as veg gains popularity in Joypurhat

Cultivation of mustard plants as leafy vegetable is gaining popularity in the district for its high demand. Hundreds of peasants across the district making good profit this season due to the rate of the item.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), around 825 hectares of land have been brought under mustard plant farming this season.

Farmers generally grow the vegetable from the last week of November and it continues till December, said sub-assistance garniture officer Azizar Rahman.

DAE officials said, "We encourage the peasants to use organic fertilisers instead of the chemical ones on their cropland."

The farmers have already started harvesting the leafy vegetable. It is now available in the local market. The item is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 per kg across the area. 

Deputy director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said Joypurhat district is one of the leading vegetable producing areas in the country. He laid emphasis on cultivating mustard leaf on commercial basis.
