Grassroots people attain solvency by rearing ducks

NAOGAON, Dec 12: Atrai upazila of the district is generally well-known as high crop producing area.

Apart from crop cultivation, farmers of the area are now concentrating in different aspects of agriculture.

Shahidul Islam of Rasulpur village under Shahagola union is one of them who changed his fortune by rearing ducks.

"My family was in worst financial condition three years ago. It was my dream that I would do something better for my family", Shahidul said.

"I started the farm with only 50 ducks and now there are around 550 ducks at my farm. Each duck needs Tk 50 to Tk 60 to grow up and gives 250 to 280 eggs per year", he added.

Shahidul further said ducks need less food as they pass most of the day-time in nearby beel.

Shahed Ali and Majid of the same village informed they are happy with their families after they started duck rearing few months ago inspired by Shahidul's success.

Officials at the Upazila Livestock Office said Shahidul is doing eye-catching business through duck rearing. 

Unemployed youths are also being engaged in the venture for high profit, they added.
