MAGURA, Dec 31: Cabbage growers in the district are frustrated over the present low market prices.

Sources said though a bumper production of cabbage has been achieved, farmers are not getting fair prices of their produce this season.

A sharp fall in cabbage price has faded smile on the faces of cabbage growers.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said cabbage was cultivated on 340 hectares of land in the district and the total production may stand at 1,020 tonnes.

Golam Hossein of Gopalgrm village under Magura Sadar said he has cultivated cabbage on two bighas of land this season.

The farmer said, "I have earned Tk 5,000 till now. If the price remains the same I won't be able to earn not more than Tk 4,000 till the end of the season."

Such low price is disappointing, the poor cultivator added.

Mrinal Kanti of Bashkuta village said, "Cabbage was sold at Tk 20 per kg in the retail market two weeks ago. That time we had sold cabbage at Tk 15 per kg in the wholesale market. The item is still selling at Tk 20 per kg in the retail market but we sell at Tk 5.0 to Tk 7.0 per kg in the wholesale market."

Trader Hurunur Rashid in the Dhaka road area said, "We did not send the item to Dhaka and other districts over the last few days due to transportation problem. Plenty supply in the local market is the main reason for price fall."

District marketing officer Jakir Hossein said cabbage price may improve after a few days.
