Magura cucumber growers get bumper production

MAGURA, Feb 16: Magura growers achieved a bumper production of cucumber in the district this season.  At the same time cucumber is being sold in the district at a high price. In this situation they are expecting a handsome profit from their produce.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources informed, this year a total of 70 hectares of land has been brought under cucumber cultivation in the district and the total production will stand at 1,190 tonnes.

Golam Kuddus, a farmer of village Akshi under Magura Sadar upazila said, this year I have brought my two bighas of land under cucumber cultivation. In the meantime I have earned Tk 80,000 and I am expecting Tk 20,000 more. 

Jalaluddin, a farmer of village Fulbari under Magura Sadar upazila said, at present cucumber is being sold at Tk 35 per kg in the retail market. This price is satisfactory, though we have sold it at higher price one month ago.

Moreover we are free from the exploitation of middlemen cucumber is collected directly from our field.

Kamrul Hasan, a vegetable wholesaler of Dhaka road area in Magura town said, now every day we are sending cucumber of Tk 1.5 million to Tk 2.0 million to different parts of the country from Magura.

At the same time growers are getting fair price of the crop. Existing price of cucumber is high in the market and such price will prevail more about one month.

Palli Prokriti executive director Shafiqur Rahman said, cucumber cultivation is turning fortune of Magura farmers. Ten years ago cucumber was cultivated in the district on 40 hectares of land. This year the cultivation has been extended to 70 hectares. If cucumber growers get loan at small interest the cultivation will be increased to a great extent.

Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossen said, cucumber cultivation is turning fortune   of Magura farmers. This year Magura farmers are enjoying cucumber cultivation due to bumper production and fair price.
