Maize harvest progresses fast in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Apr 16 (BSS): Harvest of maize, one of the cash crops of the district, has been progressing fast in all the seven upazilas here for few weeks last amid much enthusiasm to the farmers.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 12,000 hectares of land of the district were brought under maize farming during the current season.

Of the total, some 1,680 hectares of land were farmed in Sadar, 850 hectares in Sadullapur, 770 hectares in Palashbari, 2,400 hectares in Gobindaganj, 1,400 hectares in Sundarganj, 600 hectares in Shaghata and 4,300 hectares of land in Fulchhari upazila.

The harvest of the crop started this month and has been going on in full swing and it will continue till May, said an official of the DAE.

The farmers are getting desired output against the crop this year and also earning economical profit through selling it at local markets. Per maund of maize is being sold at Tk 800 to Tk 820 depending on its quality.

Timely distribution of maize seed, fertilizers, agri inputs to the farmers side by side with providing technological support and trainings from the field level agri officials are the main reasons behind getting desired output.

Anguri Begum, a farmer of Char Khatiamari under Fazlupur union of Fulchhari upazila, said she cultivated the variety on two bighas of land this year and got desired production of the crop.

Climatic condition was favourable to farm the maize this year; resulting the crop had grown well at the vast land of the char, she added.
