RMP cyber crime unit attained people's trust

The cybercrime unit of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) attained success in gaining people's trust and confidence in combating crimes related to cyber crimes in the metropolis since its inception on September 17, 2020.

It has been working relentlessly in the field of unearthing clueless incidents, criminal identification and subsequently bringing them to book. Apart from this, it's sending necessary and demand-driven information to the adjacent district through proper channels.

RMP launched the cybercrime unit to contain all sorts of cyber-related crimes three and half years back. Since then, the unit has been playing a vital role towards bringing those involved in spreading anti-state rumours misleading information, and pictures through using Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter) and other social media to book within the shortest possible time, according to a BSS report.

Utpol Kumar Chowdhury, additional deputy police commissioner (CTTC & LIC), said that the unit has become service-oriented and by putting its best efforts into the public interest.

It is capable of detecting criminals through close coordination with Police Headquarters, Special Branch and the cybercrime-related departments of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Utpol Chowdhury said they are extending support towards identification and arrest of criminals in connection with the cybercrime.

They have received 8,371 complaints related to cybercrime, and so far disposed of 7,785 of those till March 31, meaning that the disposal rate is 93 per cent.

Moreover, the unit has also disposed of 173 pornography and 148 cyber violence against women cases of harassment and blackmailing of women by threatening to spread their sensational videos, hacking Facebook accounts, and sending pornographic pictures and videos through fake messenger.

Some other cases included 5,021 lost mobile and laptop recovered, 813 online transactions, 703 drug trading, 157 kidnappings and trafficking and 121 clueless crimes and murder cases.

Such steps of the Cyber Crime Unit have earned appreciation and praise from the cross section of people.

Utpol Chowdhury also said they have intensified surveillance activities to protect adolescents from different types of crimes.

They also have achievements in terms of investigating 315 Facebook hackings, 266 fake accounts, 226 cyberbullying and 190 pornography accounts.

"We have identified 114 threats on Facebook messenger and 37 thefts," he said, adding that many other frauds related to IMO, WhatsApp and email were detected.

Smartphone culture among young and juveniles is one of the main causes of increasing social crimes. By using smartphones, underage young boys and girls are becoming addicted to pornography.

As a result, smartphone culture was also destroying the humanitarian and religious values, traditions and norms of the society.

He said special care needs to be taken to the juveniles by their guardians at home while they grow up.

Expressing their satisfaction three cybercrime victims, Shahadat Hossain, 27, Abu Raihan, 27, and Farhan Ahmed Rashin, 13, said the RMP's cyber crime unit has freed them from great anxiety and mental suffering.
