The people of remote villages in Sachna Bazaar Union under Jamalganj upazila of the district have been suffering much while crossing the Piain river as there is no concrete bridge over the river.

During a rainy season, public sufferings mount to a great extent for crossing the river by boat.

Local people have got frustrated after getting no response from the upazila administration, lawmakers and the planning minister.

The Piain flows through Bhorotpur and Kukraposhi in the union.

The river remains live almost round the year while people have to cross it for going to schools, colleges, markets, vote centres and other purposes time and again.

Locals say they cross the river over a bamboo bridge, risking their lives.

They either use boats during the monsoon or cross the river through bamboo-made temporary bridge during the dry season.

Often the link remains snapped when boat service remained stopped with the river becomes turbulent during monsoon.

The people then get no alternative but to walk 05 kilometre to reach destinations, locals said.

A number of schoolchildren say they have to cross the river time and again same day for various purposes like attending private tutors or regular schooling etc.

Some seniors said they have to cross the river time and again for various purposes amid much trouble.

Whenever the elections get closer, the leaders talk about construction of a bridge and assure the voters, but forget everything after the polls.

A bridge could bring a big change in the socioeconomic development of the area, as Sachna bazaar, Sachna-Sunamganj Road, Sachna High School, upazila offices are on one side.

There are Bhorotpur Government Primary School and Chandpur Government Primary School on the other side.

Bhorotpur School is used as polling centre of the area.

Locals say they see people come and survey for a possible bridge ahead of the election.

The LGED officials also visited the riverbank site and talk about bridge construction.

"But, we find no visible results as yet," says Sajib Roy of Bhorotpur said.

An official at the LGED said, "Soil test and design for a bridge is already done."

"We are to get the final site selection. Hopefully, it would be started in the coming fiscal."
