A least four people, including a fisheries department officer, have been injured as some fishermen allegedly attacked members of a mobile court at Shotaki area in Matlab Upazila of Chandpur.

The fishermen attacked the members of the court while they were conducting a drive on Meghna River over the ongoing Hilsa ban on Tuesday.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sharmin Akter conducted the drive around 4:30 pm, reports UNB.

She said eight fishermen who were netting hilsa attacked them during the drive injuring four members of the law enforcers, including fisheries department officer Manjur Alam.

Police fired 18 blank shoots to control the situation and caught the fishermen along with boats and current net.

Each of seven fishermen was sentenced for one year jail while another who was a minor boy was given simple punishment, said the UNO.

The hilsa ban came into effect on October 7 and will continue until October 28 to save mother hilsa which lays eggs during the period.
