Foreigner put on two-day remand for cheating

A Sylhet court on Friday placed a foreigner on a two-day remand in a case filed over cheating a teacher of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Police produced Donuts Emeco Onisiua, a Nigerian national and also member of an international cheating gang, before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, reports UNB.

Earlier on Thursday, police detained the man on charge of cheating a teacher of SUST from a hotel in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.

Prof Dr Faruk Mia of Genetics Engineering Department filed a case with Shah Paran Police Station on Thursday, said Akter Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station.

According to the case statement, the gang took Tk 500,000 in three phases after sending an e-mail invitation to the professor for attending a seminar in USA.

Paritosh Gosh, additional commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), at a press conference held in the morning, said Emeco Onisiua is a member of an international cheating gang.

Many of Bangladeshis and foreign people are involved with the gang, he said adding: "We are trying to identify the Bangladeshis who are involved with the gang."
