A local leader of an Awami League-allied group has been killed in a bomb attack in Jessore.

Another person was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred at the town’s Palbari Statue intersection after midnight on Sunday, said Kotowali Police Station OC Azmal Huda.

The deceased has been identified as Monirul Islam, 38, while the other victim was identified as Santosh Ghosh, 36.

Islam was the organisational secretary of the district branch of the Torun League, said district Jubo League Press Secretary Zahid Hossain Milon. Ghosh is a member of the Jubo League, he added.

The two were at the Palbari intersection around midnight when a group of seven to eight threw six cocktail bombs at them, said OC Huda.

“The explosions wounded Monir’s head and body. The attackers then hacked him with sharp weapons. Santosh was critically injured in the explosions.”

Locals took the two to Jessore General Hospital after the attackers left. Islam died before reaching the hospital, said Emergency Division in-charge Dr Kollol Kumar Saha.

Islam’s body contained splinters from the explosion and wounds from the attack with sharp weapons. Santosh is also in critical condition.

Both the victims are supporters of district Awami League General Secretary Shaheen Chakladar, said Jubo League leader Zahid Hossain Milonm, bdnews24 reported.

“Mostafa aka Mosto and his accomplices were the attackers. They are criminals protected by Sadar MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed.”

“We have yet to confirm the identity of the attackers,” said Kotowali Police Station Inspector (Operations) Shamsuddoha. “Police have launched an operation to arrest the perpetrators.”

Jessore-3 MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed could be reached for comments about this.
